Dog ownership confers many physical, social, and mental health benefits. A 2013 article from the American Heart Association Council on Clinical Cardiology and Council on Cardiovascular and Stroke Nursing explained that because dog owners exercise more than people who do not, they may have lower blood pressure and better cardiovascular health. Spending quality time with a dog also increases the owner’s production of oxytocin, one hormone that helps combat stress. A 1991 article in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine reported that dog owners report experiencing fewer minor health problems and doctors’ visits annually.

Research also shows dog ownership can lead to the owner forming closer social connections. While walking their dogs, other people may initiate social interaction with them more, or view them more favorably. Dog owners may also know their neighbors better and view them more positively than residents without dogs. They can gain the benefits of social interaction and companionship, without the emotional baggage associated with spending time with another human.
